Napoli character pleases Benitez

The Partenopei were beaten in the Champions League by Arsenal on Tuesday but showed their mettle in bouncing back on Sunday
Rafa Benitez declared his happiness with the character shown by his Napoli side after they saw off Livorno 4-0.

The Partenopei suffered their first defeat under the Spaniard on Tuesday, when they lost 2-0 to Arsenal in the Champions League, but goals from Goran Pandev, Gokhan Inler, Jose Callejon and Marek Hamsik ensured the Naples club bounced back on Sunday.

"We showed all our character after the defeat on Tuesday," Benitez told Sky Sports. "It was a difficult game but we managed to win it well.

The former Inter and Liverpool boss then praised the display of Dries Mertens and discussed his thoughts on getting the best out of Pandev.

He continued: "Mertens has proven his value but he is a player we already knew. Pandev? He plays better in the middle but we have no problems with playing him out wide as well."

Benitez brought in 10 new players over the summer as he looked to reshape the squad left behind by predecessor Walter Mazzarri but the 53-year-old hinted his recruitment policy may continue in the January transfer window.

"We are still missing a little something and we know it but I am happy with the performance of my defence."

Napoli sit in second spot in Serie A on the back of Sunday's win and trail leaders Roma by two points.
