Despite admitting his players are improving, the Italian prompted caution regarding expectations this season
The Nerazzurri went up against the Italian champions after Mauro Icardi's strike, but were pegged back immediately by Arturo Vidal's equaliser two minutes later.
Following a series of other close calls, Mazzarri has underlined the need for his team to remain unperturbed by title talk and concentrate on addressing their problems instead.
"We should not even include ourselves in the title discussion," the 51-year-old insisted to Sky Sport. "We are a team that have started from scratch.
"We are doing well above people's expectations but it is early. We need to reflect on our attitude after our lead, because we were too convinced we had already won.
"The psychological effect of their equaliser also meant we ran the risk of losing the game."
Despite the setback, Mazzarri remained satisfied with the progress displayed by a team which finished ninth in Serie A last season.
"Before the game, I had hoped to watch Inter enter the pitch as we did," he continued.
"In the second period we entered the match and tried to win it. This team has done much in little time and keep up with the top of the class."
