thumbnail Hello,

The Italy international believes a win over their rivals in Florence would put them in a great position to secure a place in Europe's premier club competition

AC Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia believes a win in their next Serie A match against Fiorentina will be key in the team's quest for Champions League qualification.

After a disappointing start to the campaign, Massimiliano Allegri's side have been in excellent form since the turn of the year and now sit third in the Serie A table, six points clear of Fiorentina in fourth, and Amelia believes three points in Florence would put them firmly in the driving seat for a top-three finish.

"The match against Fiorentina pits us against an opponent that we are fighting against. We are playing against a team that [plays] great football and has great players and is doing very well," he told the Milan Channel.

"We are playing for the Champions League with them and with Napoli, but it all depends on us and how we cope with both the training and matches before the end of the season.

"We have to be careful because they have so many quality players and can cause us trouble. We must go to Florence to look for the three points as that would be a great boost for this final stage of the championship
."

The 31-year-old also spoke of the difficult circumstances surrounding the 1-0 win over Chievo on Saturday, after the death of club journalist Claudio Lippi.

He added: "It was like we had to win on Saturday. It had been a particularly difficult and hard week from an emotional point of view.

"We are happy with the success and we just wanted to dedicate it to Claudio
."
