Serie A Team Of The Week: Round 26

Goal.com looks at the best performing players from round 26 of the Serie A calendar...

Antonio Cassano - Sampdoria-Milan - Serie A (Grazia Neri)
BEST XI

Formation: 3-4-3

Goalkeeper

Sebastien Frey (Fiorentina): On a weekend when Inter’s Julio Cesar let himself down, Frey was again at his imperious best, and was the reason Fiorentina came away from Reggina with a point. One miraculous stop on Francesco Cozza.

Defence

Nicolas Frey (Chievo): It’s a family affair this week, as Nicolas joins older brother Sebastien. The Chievo defender has not always had an easy season, but on Sunday he stopped one of Serie A’s most dangerous home sides in Atalanta.

Stefano Lucchini (Sampdoria):
Superb at the back during Sampdoria’s 2-1 win over Milan. Made two excellent interventions on Alexandre Pato and Pippo Inzaghi.

John Arne Riise (Roma):
Possibly Riise’s best performance in a Roma shirt since joining from Liverpool last summer. Excelled down the left flank, scored his side’s second after roasting Maicon, and also tested Julio Cesar with a rocket of a free kick.

Midfield

Pasquale Foggia (Lazio): Retains his place in Team of the Week with another impressive showing against Bologna. Looked dangerous every time he received the ball – Foggia is knocking on Marcello Lippi’s door.

Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria): Dominated the midfield at the Stadio Ferraris, bossing and bullying Andrea Pirlo, David Beckham and Mathieu Flamini. Took the corner for Cassano’s opener.

Daniele De Rossi (Roma): De Rossi always seems to save his best for Inter, and it was no different at San Siro on Sunday night. Opened the scores with a thumping header, and was the standout player in the middle-of-the-park.

Pablo Ledesma (Catania): Has had a fine debut season in Serie A since joining from Boca Juniors, and excelled during the emphatic 4-0 Sicilian Derby win over Palermo. Opened the scoring with a diving header.

Attack

Mauro Zarate (Lazio): The Zarate Kid is back! After some indifferent performances of late, the Argentine wowed the Stadio Olimpico against Bologna, scoring both of his side’s goals. The first was a delicious free kick, the second a delicate chip over goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli.

Giuseppe Mascara/Takayuki Morimoto (Catania):
Impossible to separate these two players after they wreaked havoc up-front in the crushing of Palermo. Mascara scored what is likely to go down as Goal of the Season by outrageously lobbing Marco Amelia from the halfway line. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Morimoto scored one, made two, and is one to watch for the future.

Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria): Makes Team of the Week for the fourth round in succession after a magical performance against Milan. Scored one, made one, and ran Daniele Bonera and Philippe Senderos ragged. Surely Lippi cannot afford to ignore this talent?
