Simeone: I want to be above them all

The ambitious Argentine coach is determined for Atletico to be the best in Spain after significant improvement in the Spanish Primera Division this year
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone wants his side to continue on an upward climb after making substantial progress this season and targets becoming the best in La Liga ahead of his side's clash against rivals Real Madrid this weekend.

The Colchoneros are three points behind Madrid heading in to Saturday’s contest and Simeone believes regardless of the result, Atletico have shown real progress this season in the league.

“The league does not end on Saturday, obviously there remains many games and our aspirations continue to grow. We said earlier in the season, we wanted to improve on last year when we were fifth. We can go higher, but it is good growth for the club,” he told reporters.

Atletico were winners away to Sevilla last weekend and a win will draw them level with Madrid in second place, but finishing above their city rivals is not the only goal for Simeone and his side, he added: "For me I would like to be above them all, not just Real Madrid. It is not just Madrid, I have no rival.”

Simeone does not believe his side’s supporters would favour a victory in either this fixture, or next month’s Copa del Rey final between the sides.

"I do not think any fan of Atletico would choose one game or another. Any fan wants to win the league match and the final," he continued.

"I think we should look at how many years we were not in the position to compete with them in the table, as well as in the games. People talk a lot but I am not paying much attention to the words."
