'I couldn't believe it' - Suarez shares surprise at Spain call-up
The Atletico Madrid midfielder is in line to receive his first cap for La Furia Roja in a friendly against Uruguay and is thrilled stating, "it is a day he will always remember"
Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez admits he was shocked at first in receiving a call-up for Spain's friendly against Uruguay on Wednesday.
With both Xabi Alonso and Xavi pulling out of the squad through injury, the current world and European champions have turned to Suarez, who could make his debut for the national team, to shore up their depleted midfield.
The clearly delighted 25-year-old was surprised to get a call from coach Vicente del Bosque, but after it sank in, he could not wait to tell his family.
“At first I did not believe, but soon the whole world has learned through Twitter and I've spoken to the family.”
Whilst he may not be a household name, Suarez has been impressing at Vicente Calderon this season, and hopes to add a full international cap to his honours from Under-16 to Under-21 level.
And he plans on savouring every second of Wednesday's match against the Copa America champions.
He added: "It is a day I will always remember for this call and I am very happy. Let's see if I can enjoy further this call. I've always said to be in the best squad in the world is great. I will work hard to stay there."
