Pique: Barcelona want to repeat Wembley success
The towering defender has set his sights on achieving glory in Europe's elite club competition this term, and has spoken of his admiration for Franz Beckenbauer among others
Gerard Pique has made it clear that Barcelona dream of going all the way in the Champions League, to win their third European Cup at Wembley - and their fifth in total. The Catalans previously came out victorious at the London ground in 1992 and 2011, and Pique is determined to repeat those prior successes this term.
"Wembley means a lot for Barca. It's a very special stadium. The club won its first European Cup there with [Ronald] Koeman [against Sampdoria], and got another win in 2011," Pique stated at a social media event.
"We hope to repeat our success there, but the road is long. We're on the right track, although it won't be easy. We have to work hard."
Wembley is not the only English stadium that Pique has fond memories of, though, as he thoroughly enjoys the atmosphere in British arenas.
"You get the best atmosphere when you go to England in the Champions League. I still remember Andres [Iniesta]'s goal at Stamford Bridge or when we played away at Arsenal.
"In England you can feel the fans on top of you."
The centre-back then went on to discuss his favourite players, mentioning team-mate Carles Puyol as one of his idols.
"My idols? [Franz] Beckenbauer was the greatest in my position. Then come [Paolo] Maldini, who was a real role model, and Puyi.
"In general, Johan Cruyff, Pele and [Diego] Maradona are the best players in the history of the game."
