FIFA's official analysis of the 2010 World Cup finals has suggested that Spain could be team of the century.
The Iberians won the footballing extravaganza in style on African soil in July to back up the European championship they had won two years ago. An official analysis from FIFA now reveals la Furia Roja could be one of the best team's in history.
Jean-Paul Brigger, the director of FIFA's 16-man technical study group that published the report, has been quoted by PA as saying, "Spain won the UEFA Euro in 2008 and are now world champions too, which is a stunning success. The Spanish team has grown and developed together and is now capable of fantastic, highly attractive football.
"They're compact, and tackle and run hard too. Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta and Xabi Alonso in midfield cover huge amounts of ground but play fabulous football too – it looks pretty and even playful, but it's actually very hard work indeed.
"They're a complete team, arguably contenders for team of the century. And up until the final, the Dutch also played some fine football."
The report also claims that African teams harmed their chances of World Cup success by employing foreign coaches and criticises goalkeepers for inexplicable errors but didn't speak much about the questionable refereeing decisions that were replete in South Africa.
