Veteran Villarreal midfielder Robert Pires has refuted suggestions that he played a part in the dismissal of coach Ernesto Valverde.

Valverde took over from Manuel Pellegrini in the summer but was sacked last week after an inconsistent start to the season for the Yellow Submarine.

"I read that it is my fault that Ernesto Valverde is no longer here because of statements I made in some press conference and that bothers me a lot because it is not true. I've never played to have a coach sacked," he told AS before adding that his side must improve from the performance they gave in the 2-0 home defeat to Osasuna, Valverde's last game in charge.

"We also have some of the blame and now we have to try not to repeat the display we gave in the last game."

Pires also declared that the players now have to prove themselves to new coach Juan Carlos Garrido.

"Everyone has to give more. We all have the opportunity to convince the new coach and I think the competition will be good for everybody," he noted.
