thumbnail Hello,

With the champions in severe danger of missing out on Champions League football next term, the striker says the squad must prove their worth until the end of the season

Wayne Rooney insists only the players can be blamed for Manchester United's poor form ahead of their Champions League tie against Olympiakos.

The Premier League champions have been knocked out of both the FA Cup and Capital One Cup, while their chances of securing a top-four place is in doubt as they trail Liverpool by 11 points.

And Rooney has urged his team-mates to step up and be counted as they look to finish the season on a high.

"As a group of players we have to take responsibility for the league position we are in. We know we are better than that," the striker told reporters.

"We haven’t performed as well as we can do. We know that, and it hurts when as a team you know you can do better. We haven’t and it’s important we finish the season strong, and take the momentum into next year.

"But it’s most important that we finish the season strong, get that fourth spot and progress far into the Champions League. It’s important to us all."

When asked how he'd like to be remembered once he retires, Rooney replied: "As a winner.

"I think every player wants to win and I’m no different. I grew up all my life wanting to win trophies.

"That’s my main aim. At United that’s what we aim to do - win trophies. That’s what you’ll be judged on when you’ve finished your career. Not just me but the whole team."
