The Gunners No.1 put in commanding displays in recent wins over Swansea City and Napoli and his manager believes that this improvement will inspire confidence in those around him

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is delighted with Wojciech Szczesny's recent performances, noting a marked improvement in the goalkeeper's command of the penalty area.

The 23-year-old faces increased competition for the No.1 spot following the loan arrival of Italy international Emiliano Viviano from Palermo in the summer but put in impressive displays against Swansea City and Napoli.

"He comes off the line much more to claim the ball," Wenger observed to the club's official website.

"His movement to take the ball at the peak is much better and he has shown that, especially in the last two games against Swansea and Napoli, when it was needed to come off the line and take a cross.

"It sometimes has a psychological impact on an opposing team when a goalkeeper comes to claim a cross or is quick off his line."

Szczesny recently commented that he was "obsessed” with keeping clean sheets and Wenger is happy to nurture this obsession if it serves up more results like the 2-0 win over Napoli.

"He got one and I can understand that because, as a goalkeeper, you always think you are doing your job well when you have a clean sheet," the manager explained. "It's the same for defenders as well."
