Barton: I wanted Amalfitano at QPR

The 31-year-old midfielder played with the Frenchman while on loan at Marseille last term and has hit out at English football's lack of knowledge regarding Ligue 1's top talents
Joey Barton encouraged QPR to sign Marseille's Morgan Amalfitano before he completed his loan switch to West Brom, though the west London side were unaware of the 28-year-old.

The Frenchman is currently on a season-long loan deal at the Hawthorns and has scored twice in three Premier League appearances for the Baggies this term.

Barton, who played alongside Amalfitano at the Stade Velodrome last season, was keen for Harry Redknapp to bring the midfielder to Loftus Road, but the Hoops had no idea who he was.

"I am still in contact with some of my former team-mates. I speak to Morgan. I really tried to get him here," he told l'Equipe.

"I spoke about him to the manager, to scouts, but here we don't know the French championship.

"I said to them: 'He is a good player - get him over here'. They told me: 'We don't even know who he is.'"

Amalfitano scored the first goal in West Brom's 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday as Steve Clarke's men moved to 10th in the table, and Barton was always confident Amalfitano would flourish in the Premier League.

"When he scored this weekend against Manchester United, I took the mickey out of them [QPR]," he added. "I knew that in England, he would do well."
