Pardew: Newcastle squad need boost from new signings

The Magpies were heavily beaten by Manchester City in their Premier League opener, leaving the 52-year-old insistent that his squad needs new additions before the window closes

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew believes his squad want to see new players brought to the club.

Loic Remy is the only senior player to have arrived at St James' Park in this transfer window, with a number of squad players departing and Yohan Cabaye the subject of reported interest from Arsenal.

Fans vented their anger at the lack of transfer activity during Newcastle's 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Monday and Pardew reckons that his players want new recruits as well.

"A big player coming in boosts the group as well as the fans," he told The Chronicle.

"I'm not going to say something that I don't think is true and say, 'oh, it's not affecting them'.

"I think they'd like to see another striker come in the door.

"That's something that hopefully will be done before the window shuts."

Newcastle have already missed out on striker Darren Bent, who joined Fulham on a season-long loan last week, and have seen negotiations for Lyon's Bafetimbi Gomis falter.

While Pardew would like further reinforcements, he is prepared for the worst-case scenario.

"If it doesn't (happen), like anything in life, we're going to have to get on with it with what we've got," he continued.

"We've still got a very good team with Remy on top of it."

Remy, who is on loan at the club from QPR, is suffering with a calf injury and is likely to miss Saturday's clash with West Ham.
