The striker has failed to recapture the form which made him one of the most feared strikers in the world at Liverpool since his £50 million move, but has 20 goals this season

Rafa Benitez insists Chelsea are finally beginning to see the best of Fernando Torres as a result of the changes he has made to the striker's training programme.

Torres has failed to recapture the form which made him one of the most feared strikers in the world at Liverpool since moving to Stamford Bridge for £50 million in January 2011.

But he has still scored 20 goals this season, including three in his last five matches, and Benitez insists this improvement is due to a new training regime which has improved all aspects of his game.

“Fernando has been doing a specific plan in the gym with our fitness coach Paco de Miguel,” Benitez told reporters.

“He’s been lifting some weights and also working on his speed and you can see that he’s stronger and quicker now.

“It was the same plan Paco used with him when we were together at Liverpool and as soon as we arrived at Chelsea in November, we started doing little things on this specific work.

“But it’s not just his work with Paco. He has also been improving his finishing on the training pitch with both Bolo Zenden and Steve Holland.

“It’s been a lot of extra work but he was keen to do it, even though it hasn’t been easy when we’ve been playing two or three games every week.

“We tried to work on his movement and to restore the confidence he lost when he wasn’t scoring goals.

“But he’s quicker and stronger now, as well as being more confident now that he’s scoring again.

“We have worked on every aspect of his game, not just his physical condition. We’re fixing little things and you can all see the improvement.

“It’s more difficult for him now than when we signed him for Liverpool from Atletico Madrid because centre-backs know him more and are used to his game.

“But he’s coming back to his level and his contribution to the team is bigger and bigger with every game.

“So it doesn’t concern me that it will go when I leave Chelsea. Fernando is a good professional and now he understands what he has to do.”
