The 20-year-old sustained the injury in FA Cup action for Wigan against Everton on Saturday, needing to be stretchered off after only 32 minutes on the pitch.
The Japan international will be sidelined for the rest of the season, and Latics manager Roberto Martinez has bemoaned the injury to the player.
“It’s a real shame that Ryo has suffered this injury after working so hard to regain his fitness following a setback earlier in the season,” Martinez told reporters.
“His professionalism and work ethic on a daily basis have always been superb and we’ll do everything we can to help him make a speedy recovery.”
