After his 500th Premier League appearance, the 35-year-old praised his side's character and singled Luis Suarez out in particular after the Reds snatched a narrow win over Spurs

Jamie Carragher hailed his team-mates’ character as Liverpool came back from 2-1 down to earn a "massive win" against Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.

Spurs were leading with half an hour to play thanks to a Jan Vertonghen double before Stewart Downing equalised and a Steven Gerrard penalty gave the hosts all three points to lift them to sixth in the Premier League.

"I think the turning point was the second goal really," Carragher told Sky Sports after the match.

"Tottenham were playing well at the start of the second half and got 2-1 in front and it's not something we've done too often this season [come from behind] so it's a massive win for us playing a top team, which they are.

"I think they showed that at times today and to come through with the character and also the quality to beat a top team like Tottenham was great.

"We're winning games and just concentrating on the next game so I'd say the way we're playing the results we're getting, just carry on like that and see where we end up at the end of the season."

Sunday’s victory marked Carragher’s 500th league appearance but the centre-back insisted he was more concerned with the result, highlighting Luis Suarez’s role in the 3-2 win.

He continued: "It's a lot of games, it's a nice achievement, I suppose, but it's nice that we won. It was my 150th European game a few weeks ago but we went out of the Europa League so it was a disappointing night so I'm just delighted [Suarez] has done the business again.

"He’s a top man and he's won us the game and it makes it a nice achievement. There's a lot of talk between him, Bale and Van Persie for player of the year and those are the top two. Gareth Bale showed some glimpses today, some fantastic touches and crosses for the goals but [Suarez] is man of the match."

As well as scoring Liverpool’s opener, Suarez won the penalty that settled the game for the home side and the 26-year-old insisted that there was sufficient contact between him and defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto for the spot-kick to be given.

He said: "I think [there was] contact with Assou-Ekotto and you can watch on TV - he didn't discuss it with the ref."
