Benitez brushes off Chelsea fans' boos
The Spaniard congratulated the Blues' fans for their "really positive" support of the team during Saturday's 1-0 win over West Brom, while underlining his want to see out his deal
Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has brushed off boos aimed in his direction during his team's 1-0 victory over West Brom.
The Spaniard claimed in midweek that sections of the Blues support were creating an uncomfortable atmosphere at matches because of their opposition to his role as interim manager at the club.
However, following Saturday’s win, Benitez instead highlighted the crowd’s positive effect of the team despite a number of banners calling for his immediate removal.
When asked about the reaction of certain supporters, Benitez told reporters: "What you can see is the players playing with more confidence and the fans behind the team. Again I will not say too much about that, but it was really good and really positive.
"I'll say I'm really pleased with the fans who were behind the team. The players played with more confidence, it was clear and it was really positive.
"The team is doing well and I will continue to work very hard, that is the only way."
Benitez also hit out at owner Roman Abramovich for the “massive mistake” in naming him as ‘interim’ manager on Wednesday, insisting it undermines his position.
But he underlined his determination to see out his current deal until the end of the season, adding: "I am contracted to the end of the season, that is the only thing. The way I approach my job is to be ready for the next game.
