Asprilla enjoyed a two-spell at the Magpies after joining from Parma in 1996 and has revealed he is set take up his new role in March.
The 43-year-old also confirmed he hopes to help the club pick up the best talent from his native Colombia.
He told Radio Antena 2: “Some teams in England are going after the Spaniards, so I want Newcastle to fix their eyes on Colombian talent.”
Newcastle are currently enjoying an excellent run of form which has seen them win four of their last five matches and seal a place in the last-16 of the Europa League.
