Allen: Liverpool still have plenty to play for this season
The midfielder admitted Thursday night’s Europa League defeat to Zenit was “extremely disappointing” but is now eager to finish as high up the league as possible
Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen says his side still have plenty to play for this season, despite their Europa League exit at the hands of Zenit St Petersburg on Thursday night. The Welshman scored the Reds' second as they beat the Russians 3-1 at Anfield, but Hulk's early strike ensured the visitors progressed on the away goals rule.
And, whilst Allen bemoaned the Merseyside outfit's failure to progress, he underlined the importance of finishing as high up the league table as possible.
He told the club's official website: "It was extremely disappointing. You score, win the second tie 3-1 and still don't go through - it's pretty hard to take.
"The score-line showed how much effort we put into the game and on another day we might have done enough to go through.
"The intensity of our performance, and the will and determination to try everything we could to get through, was evident.
"It's hard to look at the positives at this moment but when we look back I'm sure we will.
"We approach every game between now and the end of the season to try and get as many points as we can and get ourselves as high a position in the table as we can.
"There might not be a trophy to play for but there's plenty for us as a football club to play for and we'll do that."
