Lescott targets new contract as he aims to see out career at Manchester City

Lescott targets new contract as he aims to see out career at Manchester City

Latest Chelsea were made to defend 'way too much' by Manchester City, complains Cahill Previous

The veteran centre-back has two years left on his current deal, but believes with hard work he will earn himself an extended stay at the Etihad Stadium after a rise to prominence

Joleon Lescott has revealed that he intends to end his career at Manchester City and is hoping to secure himself a new contract with the Premier League champions.

As Goal.com exclusively revealed last month, the Blues are ready to open negotiations with the ex-Everton man, despite the purchase of promising young centre-back Matija Nastasic on transfer deadline day.

However, the 30-year-old insists that he will not kick up a fuss after a lack of movement on the subject and will carry on with his job as normal after being aware of where the club have taken him since joining in 2009.

"I've got this [season] and one more. I would love to extend it and finish my career here but that's for another day," he told The Guardian.

"I'm just focused on doing the job this season and, if that brings an extension, then great.

"Going knocking on doors isn't really my style. That's not in my character and I don't think my mum would be very happy with me if I did that. I just continue to play well and do a professional job.

"I know where I've come from. A few years ago I was playing at Plymouth on Tuesday nights; now Tuesday nights mean Champions League. I'm grateful for what I have, so I won't be rocking the boat."

Lescott also spoke of his disappointment at being dropped for City’s opening Champions League fixture against Real Madrid at Bernabeu in favour of new-boy Nastasic but reiterated that he is ready to fight for his place in Roberto Mancini's starting XI.

"It hurt," the defender noted. "I wanted to play. It's a great stadium - it was a great occasion - but you have to respect the manager's decision and pick yourself up and support the lads.

"Matija has been training with us for a couple of weeks now. He's an international, he played a lot of games for Fiorentina and he's looked strong.

"I just have to work hard. It's happened before over the last couple of seasons. I've played, been left out. It's happened during my career and I'm ready for the fight. But we're all together and we have the same goal, which is to win trophies.”
