Tottenham Hotspur striker Peter Crouch believes he is in a "strong position" to make the cut under manager Fabio Capello and is subsequently confident of inclusion in England's 2010 World Cup squad.

The hitman, a second half replacement for Spurs team-mate Jermain Defoe in the recent friendly against Egypt at Wembley, managed to hit a brace in the second half to guarantee his side a victory.

"My early days were rocky. Up and down," Crouch said in an interview with the News of the World.

"It wasn't until I was 23 or 24 that I started feeling confident about my ability and really believed I could play for England.

"And now, I think I'm in a strong position. I've been in all the recent squads and I've played a part. I've played a part in a very successful qualifying campaign and have got 37 caps.

"And I always feel that when I've played, I've done myself justice and I'm proud of the goals I have scored for England.

"I have never felt that I have let anyone down so I do think I am in a strong position."

The former Portsmouth forward insists his best days are yet to come, maintaining that, unlike most other players, he will peak in his thirties.

"I think my game's developing," he added. "I honestly believe there is better to come. I'm never going to have blistering pace but I've always felt I can get better. I reckon I will go on for a long, long time.

"I've been lucky in the fact that I've not had many injuries, touch wood." He concluded: "I honestly believe my thirties will be the best years of my career."
