Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs maintains that he has had to curb the desire to live a flashy life so as to remain fighting fit for the club.

The 36-year-old - who celebrates his birthday today - is now in his 20th season as a top-flight footballer, and he insists that his "boring" lifestyle is one of the reasons behind his longevity.

"I used to leave training and be able to go out shopping or meet up with friends in town - but not now," Giggs is quoted by the News of the World as saying.

"Now it takes me one or two days to recover from matches so I know I have to conserve energy.

"These days I go home, put my feet up and sit on the settee watching TV or DVDs.

"My life is boring, boring, boring but it's what I have to do to stay fit."

The Welshman became the 17th Premier League player to break the 100-goal barrier, when he found the net in United's victory over Portsmouth.
