Both major Manchester clubs are chasing Bayern Munich attacker Franck Ribery, according to a report in British broadsheet The Telegraph.

Manchester United have made a stuttering start in the Premier League this season and are five points behind league leaders Chelsea. Ribery could make the difference between claiming a fourth successive crown and seeing the title go south to London.

City, meanwhile, will be looking to bolster their ranks in order to achieve their ambition of securing a position in the Champions League places.

The News of the World recently ran a story indicating that the Citizens had already held "secret" talks with the Bundesliga outfit.

Now that Chelsea have been temporarily liberated from their transfer embargo, the Stamford Bridge side too have been rumoured to be preparing a bid for the in-demand France international.

According to recent reports, Bayern have already rejected a £40 million bid for Ribery, and are allegedly holding out for more.

Should the player swap Germany for England, he could become the best-paid footballer in the Premier League, on a weekly wage of around £200,000.
