Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that striker Wayne Rooney is more important to England than to Manchester United.

The 24-year-old forward is struggling for fitness to play a role against rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, which could see former Merseyside hero Michael Owen make the starting line-up.

"I think there's a bigger expectation on Wayne with England than there is with us," Ferguson told the Sunday Mirror.

"
England look upon him as the No.1 striker and it seems they don't have an absolutely certain partner for him.

"They talk about Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe. Whereas here he has Dimitar Berbatov.

"There's not the same expectation on Rooney from us as there is with England."

Rooney sustained a calf injury whilst on international duty, and is likely to miss the blockbuster clash at Merseyside along with fellow club-mate Park Ji-Sung.
