Yakubu: Michael Owen Will Be A Big Success At Manchester United
The powerful striker has gazed into his crystal ball and given his backing to Manchester United's free transfer signing...
Everton striker Yakubu thinks that Michael Owen will prove to be a huge success with Manchester United.
In a sensational move, Owen signed a two-year contract with the Red Devils yesterday, just days after being courted by Hull City and publicly rejected by Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce.
Yakubu’s club, Everton, along with Aston Villa, were considered to be the most likely destinations for Owen, who has been linked with a move after his contract with relegated Newcastle United expired.
For many, United’s interest was a surprise but the Nigerian, who spent much of last season on the treatment table - a place Owen is not unfamiliar with after his own problems - thinks the Englishman will be a big hit at Old Trafford.
"It [the move] is not a big shock to me,” he told Sky Sports.
“He's a great player. He's a great striker. He can score goals there.
"I wish him all the best there and I still believe he can score goals."
The former Portsmouth and Middlesbrough man went on to talk about the Toffees’ transfer market ambitions, saying the most important thing is to keep the current squad together.
"It's important [to keep the squad together], but it's down to the manager to decide who he wants to keep and who can leave,” added Yakubu.
"I'm just so happy to be back and start training again."
