Trivia: FA Premier League 1993-94

Did You Know?

The FA Premier League was sponsored by Carling Breweries from 1993 and this tie up continued till 2001.  

22 year old Republic of Ireland international Roy Keane was signed by champions Manchester United from the relegated Nottingham Forest for a transfer fee of £3.75 million and in doing so he became English football’s most expensive signing.  

Tim Flowers became Britain’s first ever £2million goalkeeper as he moved to Blackburn Rovers from south coast club Southampton.  

Manchester United retained the league title as they stayed at the top of the table from as early as late August till the end of the season.   The League champions won the FA Cup to complete the double and in doing so became the sixth English club to do so. (Preston North End 1889, Aston Villa 1897, Tottenham Hotspur 1961, Arsenal 1971 and Liverpool 1986).  

Manchester United also reached the League Cup Final but failed to complete the domestic treble as they lost 1-3 to Aston Villa .  

Glenn Hoddle was the first player to double up as a manager at Chelsea. The Blues finished 14th in the league but FA Cup final appearance saved their season.  

Mick Quinn of Coventry City scored a hat trick against Arsenal at Highbury and so far he is the only player to score a hat trick against the current BIG FOUR  (Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal) away from home in the league.  

1195 goals were scored at an average of 2.58.  

Newcastle United scored the most goals (82), Arsenal conceded the least (28) and Ipswich Town scored the least (35). Swindon conceded the most (100), thus becoming the first top division team in 30 years to reach the century mark.  

Swindon Town’s dismal defensive record led to their relegation along with Oldham Athletic and Sheffield United.  

Newcastle United’s Andy Cole scored 34 goals to finish as top scorer and bagged the PFA Young Player of the Year Award .  

Frenchman Eric Cantona of Manchester United won PFA Players’ Player of the Year.  

Alan Shearer’s 31 league goals helped Blackburn Rovers to finish runner-up and his personal record earned him the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.
