Trivia: FA Premier League 1992-93
Amoy Ghoshal provides us with some interesting facts of the first Premier League season which was held back in 1992-93.
The first season saw the start of a lucrative BSkyB sponsorship which allowed clubs to spend more on transfers and wages.
22 clubs contested the first season of the FA Premier League and there were a total of 11 foreign players – Anders Limpar and John Jensen (Arsenal), Andrei Kanchelskis and Peter Schmeichel (Manchester United) , Jan Stejskal (QPR), Roland Nilsson (Sheffield Wednesday) , Gunnar Halle (Oldham Athletic), Michael Vonk (Manchester City), Eric Cantona (Leeds United), Hans Segers (Wimbledon) and Craig Forest (Ipswich Town.)
A total of 1222 goals were scored at an average of 2.91 goals per game.
Brian Deane of Sheffield United scored the first ever goal in FA Premier League history when he scored on the opening day of the season against Manchester United.
Manchester United won the league, which was their first league title in 26 years and their eighth overall.
Nottingham Forest ended their 16 year tenure at the top flight of English football as they got relegated along with Crystal Palace and Middlesborough. This was to be the great Brian Clough’s last season and it ended on a sad note.
Norwich City had the unusual feat of leading the table at Christmas despite having a negative goal difference; they eventually finished third behind Manchester United and Aston Villa.
Arsenal who won the League Cup and FA Cup double under George Graham scored the least number of goals (40) that season as they finished 10th.
Manchester United conceded the least (31) while Sheffield Wednesday scored the most (76). Oldham Athletic gave 74 goals which was the highest for that season.
Defending champions Leeds United finished as low as 17th and only two points above the drop zone despite retaining most of their players from the 91-92 season. They also failed to win a match away from home.
Aston Villa’s 34 year old central defender Paul McGrath who contributed to their runner-up finish won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year.
Manchester United’s 19 year old Welsh midfielder won the PFA Young Player of the Year.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Chris Waddle won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.
Teddy Sheringham of Tottenham Hotspur finished as top scorer with 22 goals.
