Dempo SC succumbed to their fourth loss this season in the I-League as they went down 1-0 to Sporting Clube de Goa on Saturday.
Debabrata Roy handled the ball inside the area which left referee with little choice but to award a spot-kick. Boima Karpeh stepped up and converted from the spot which proved to be the only difference between the two teams.
"We have created chances in the first half also. Beto missed a free-kick and Alwyn [George] missed one, Holi (Holicharan Narzary) missed one. Even though we have no strike force, we have created chances, but if you don't score what can I say," said Mauricio Afonso.
“You create ten chances and don't score and commit one mistake, it costs you the game. Today it happened exactly like that. The defense played well. I'm not blaming them, but just one mistake when you're not attentive cost us the game.”
Beto wasn’t in top shape after having had a groin injury in the goal-less draw against Mohammedan Sporting.
“Beto is slightly injured, but he played with injury only because there were no strikers. As far as [Shinnosuke] Honda is concerned, I don't think so (he will recover soon). Simon [Colosimo] may recover but Honda - I don't think so. He is yet to recover from his ankle injury.”
Afonso praised the effort of his boys despite the defeat given that most of them aren’t very experienced.
“Even in the second half after Jeje [Lalpekhlua] came in, we created chances. I would like to say that the boys played well. Most of them are juniors, but even then they gave their best.”
It must be noted that Godwin Franco has only started one game for Dempo this term and attended a week-long trial at Germany’s second division club, namely Fortuna Dusseldorf last month. The former Pune FC medio has been called from the bench only on two occasions.
“Godwin Franco was not fit first. He was on the bench. He will definitely come. I don't have any personal grudge with any individual players. We just have to regroup and come back,” said Afonso.
