thumbnail Hello,

The general secretary of the Indian FA was pleased with the development and called for unity from all stakeholders…

India has won the hosting rights for the U-17 World Cup in 2017, as announced by FIFA following its Executive Committee meeting at Costa do Sauipe, Brazil.

Kushal Das, the general secretary of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), highlighted the effort of their president Praful Patel in helping India secure the hosting rights.

“We are extremely excited about the development. I would like thank Praful Patel without whose help and influence, this wouldn’t have happened one bit. I would also thank FIFA and AFC for all the encouragement they gave us.”

Das’ contract has been extended by three years earlier last month after having served as the general secretary of the Indian FA since November 2010.

“Without a doubt, this is the greatest achievement in my time as the general secretary here,” he said.

Indian football has been mired in controversies with several stakeholders being involved in a tussle which hasn’t helped the game grow one bit. This has been well documented with the commercial and marketing partners of the AIFF, namely IMG-Reliance and a certain section of I-League clubs not being on the same page.

Without naming anyone in particular, Das hoped that the development of hosting an U-17 World Cup would help bring everyone on the table.

“If it still doesn’t then it is a sorry state of affair. I am sure everyone will come together,” said Das.
