thumbnail Hello,

The newly appointed coach of the Kolkata outfit is confident of his team’s ability to win the country’s top division league this season…

Armando Colaco eased the nerves of East Bengal fans who, although happy to see the back of Marcos Falopa, have been a bit concerned of the change in coach ahead of the derby against Mohun Bagan this weekend.

“Yes, they can. East Bengal have a very good squad. Why can’t they win the title?” he was quoted saying in The Telegraph.

“I am ready. I have seen Dempo versus Churchill, or Dempo versus Salgaocar. So I am not new to the derbies. It’s just that hype surrounding an East Bengal versus Mohun Bagan match is so huge, the players become very nervous. For me, if you ask, it’s just another game…nothing more than that. We have a good bunch of players and I am confident we will win on Sunday.”

The former Dempo coach stated that he is ready for the challenge he faces to help East Bengal find their best form and win the league title – something that no team from Kolkata has ever done.

“Nobody would have taken this assignment. Coaching a club of East Bengal’s stature from the middle of the season is no joke. But I am not someone who runs away from challenges. I see this job as a challenge. And I will prove myself.”

“Yes, I agree that ( a game before the derby) would have helped me. But I am not complaining. What can you do if the fixture is like this? After the derby, we have four matches on the road. So that’s another challenge. Playing away is never easy. But as I said earlier, this team can go the distance.”

The pressure in Kolkata is second to none with the coach always being under the scrutiny of the media. Colaco wasn’t deterred as he highlighted toward his experience in dealing such situations.

“I know everyone in Calcutta media. So handling them will not be a problem. I am new to East Bengal, but not new to Indian football. I am someone who has seen everything in life. I will have no issues.

“I am not in favour of making drastic changes. But yes there will be some tinkering of course. I am confident the players will not find things boring from now on.”
