Mohammedan Sporting have registered Ishfaq Ahmed for the I-League and now have just a slot available, with both Syed Rahim Nabi and Mehrajuddin Wadoo vying for it.
"Yes, my registration is complete. I will be travelling with the team to Shillong," Ishfaq informed Goal on Wednesday.
As Goal had reported earlier, Mohammedan had overlooked a crucial rule which called for the inclusion of at least five Under-23 players in their squad of 30. The Kolkata club already had 24 Indian players on their roster and had to fill in two Under-23 players in the remaining six slots. However the club added five players from the IMG-Reliance’s roster, namely Manish Maithani, Luis Barreto, Ishfaq Ahmed, Syed Rahim Nabi and Mehrajuddin Wadoo – with none falling in the Under-23 category.
And with Ishfaq having been registered for them now after Maithani and Barreto, Mohammedan find themselves in a quandary to choose between Nabi and Wadoo.
Syed Rahim Nabi, the Indian Player of the year, is the favourite to make the cut, which will leave his former team-mate Wadoo high and dry.
The Kashmiri, who has plied his trade for both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in the past, has already signed for the Black and Whites, and may be deprived of the I-League action.
"I have not been informed anything so far. The club will make the decision in the next few days," Wadoo told Goal.
Sultan Ahmed, Mohammedan Sporting’s president, stated that the club is hoping to find a solution as they have asked the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to allow them a chance to register 31 players for the I-League, which looks unlikely to materialize.
"We will decide in the next 3-to-4 days. We have also requested the AIFF to relax the quota for us. Let's see what happens," he remarked.
