Mumbai FC are yet to notch full points from their three matches at home this term. Coach Khalid Jamil has called on his troops to improve their performance when they face Salgaocar FC on Friday.
“We are the home side and have to go good this time. We have to win and are desperate for it,” he told Goal.
Their opponents will play their first game outside the comforts of Goa and have made a fantastic start to their league campaign with two wins and a draw.
“I have seen Salgaocar’s games. They play good football and as of now, have the best brand of football in the league. East Bengal are also a strong side though. This means that for us to beat them, we have to be on top of our game from the start,” he mentioned.
The Mumbai FC coach praised Derrick Pereira under whom he plied his trade at Mahindra United.
“Derrick is one of the experienced and one of the best coaches in India. There is no doubt about it. I have to learn a lot from him.”
Derrick pointed that his side will have to adapt to playing on a natural turf given that they have been playing on an artificial pitch all throughout this season.
“I don’t think we have an advantage with regards to playing on a natural turf. When we travel, we have to adjust too. Most of the pitches are artificial in India these days,” he said.
With Rob Baan, the technical director for India, stating that the number of foreign players in the I-League needs to be trimmed down to two from the stipulated four (one Asian mandatory), Jamil backed the opinions of the Dutchman.
“Yes, you do need to bring down the number of foreign players. I like the idea of playing an under 23 player in the starting eleven. I also think that the I-League must have more teams and must be expanded to more regions to give it a national feel,” said Jamil.
