Churchill Alemao: Good players are neglected for national team selection

The chairman of the I-League defending champions launched a scathing attack on those who name the national team squad...

Churchill Alemao is of the opinion that the best players in the country don’t always make the cut for the national squad. His comments come after a shambolic performance at the SAFF Championship by Team India who could manage just two wins from their five matches, one of which was literally gifted thanks to an own goal by the opposition.

“Poor selection of players led to India’s dismal performance in the SAFF Cup. There are many good players in the country but more often than not they are neglected for national team selection,” he told The Navhind Times.

He heaped praise on former Churchill Brothers striker Balal Arezou who assisted the opening goal for Afghanistan in the final against India last week.

“Balal is a very good player. He is dedicated and committed. He will however not join our team this season,” he mentioned.

Alemao promised to do his bit to improve the standard of Indian football but added that confidence is lacking amongst the current lot.

“We need commitment to win titles and it can be done by infusing confidence in our (Indian) players,” he suggested.

“It is my desire to see India rise to great heights in football. I will do my best to raise the players in my team who could ultimately find a place in the Indian team,” he added.
