The 31-year old Indian international will get a bronze plaque of Sardesai and Rupees Two Lakhs as reward
The Goan government has decided to confer the Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence Award for the year 2013-14 to Indian international and Dempo SC stalwart Clifford Miranda.
The award which has been instituted in honour of Dilip Sardesai, a cricket legend from Goa, is in its fourth year since its inception by the State Government of Goa in 2009. Sportsmen and Sportswomen from Goa, who have represented the nation at international events (E.g. Olympics, Commonwealth Games etc.) in the preceding year, are generally honoured with the award. The award consists of a bronze plaque of the legendary cricketer himself, a certificate and cash reward of Rupees Two Lakhs.
So far, four footballers, all from Dempo SC have been at the receiving end of the honours. They are Mahesh Gawli (2009), Climax Lawrence (2011) and Samir Naik (2012).
Miranda, who has shown unwavering loyalty towards Dempo SC and has dedicated the entirety of his 14 year career to them, was nominated and received recommendation for the award by a special committee. He started as an amateur with the Tata Football Academy (TFA) in 1996, and thereby becoming a professional with Dempo in 2000.
Clifford has been an integral part of the Dempo SC team that has taken part in the I-League, Federation Cup, Durand Cup and Goa League. He has won all of the aforesaid competitions with the club, most notably the I-League five times.
Miranda was also a regular component of the Goa state football team for the Santhosh trophy from 2001 to 2006, winning it in 2001 and finishing runners up in 2005.
He has also represented the National team ever since he got his first call-up to the national squad in 2005, making his debut against Pakistan. He has been part of the Indian squad for the Nehru Cup in 2007, 2009 and 2012.
He also won the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship with India in 2011, while finishing as a runner-up with the team in 2009.
He has been part of the team that took part in the World Cup Qualifiers for the 2010 and 2014 World Cup respectively, while also taking part in the 2011 Asian Cup.
