The organisers of the new league are in need of only a few more Indian players as they have more or less completed their quota…
IMG-Reliance, the commercial and marketing partners of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) require just four players to be added on their roster for their new league.
They have already roped in 40 players who are undergoing their pre-season training under former East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan at Cooperage Stadium in Mumbai. 20 players from Pailan Arrows will also ply their trade in the new league as per their agreement with the AIFF and the Pailan Group.
The eight franchisees in the new league will be expected to add four local players which shall take the total number of Indian players to 96 for IMG-Reliance’s initiative.
"I think we should complete our Indian quota latest by next week. Once that happens, our focus will be turned to foreign signings," a senior official of IMG-Reliance told The Times of India.
“Our target is to sign 64 players. It will be the franchisees' responsibility to look out for the juniors to complete the Indian quota,” the official added.
IMG-Reliance are in the process of roping in foreign players for the said competition and the likes of David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Michael Owen and Raul Gonzalez are amongst the names doing the rounds.
“There will be 80 foreign players involved in the tournament. We are already in talks with some influential players but, like we told the AIFF executive committee, the names would be announced only early October,” the official mentioned.
