Goal brings you all the latest happenings from the Kolkata maidan, as Bhowmick returns to the limelight, while Mohun Bagan played a friendly game...
Subhash Bhowmick has returned to another coaching position, as he was appointed the technical director of the West Bengal team for the upcoming Santosh Trophy, on Tuesday. The ASEAN Cup winning coach, who also took Churchill Brothers to I-League victory last season, had resigned from the Goan club, citing differences with the club officials as the main reason.
Bhowmick will be assisted by coach Shisir Ghosh and Goalkeeping coach Goutam Ghosh. The veteran will be tasked with bringing glory to the side, after renowned trainers like Satyajit Chatterjee and Manoranjan Bhattacharya failed to win silverware with the record time winners of the inter-state competition.
Talking of pre-season affairs, Mohun Bagan played another practice match today, as they went past an inexperienced Barahanagar Sporting side 2-0, riding on goals from C.S.Sabeeth and Adil Khan.
Karim Bencharifa, the Mohun Bagan gaffer took this match as an ideal platform to mix and match his line-up, as he frequently changed formations. Odafa Okolie, the Nigerian goal-machine of the Mariners was the notable exclusion, as he was found training with the team physio Jonathan Corner during East Bengal's practice. It was far from an inspired display by the Green and Maroon as several passes went astray and many chances were wasted. Most of the Bagan players failed to impress, except for C.S.Sabeeth and the newly recruited Ravinder Singh.
Katsumi Yusa failed to grab a chance to impress his new coach, as the new Japanese midfielder of the Kolkata giants failed to convert a spot kick in the first half. Later on as well, the former ONGC playmaker failed to slot the ball into the back of the net, with the entire goal at his mercy.
Bencherifa also vented his disappointment at the team's performance. He conceded that the team played poor football in the first half, but also pointed out that they were better after the break. Mohun Bagan will leave for Durgapur on Thursday, as their pre-season residential camp will be held in the Steel City of West Bengal.
Bagan also added another member to their squad, as they signed Zakeer Mundampara from United SC. The midfielder, who had previously plied his trade for Viva Kerala and Churchill Brothers, had his first practice session under the tutelage of Karim on Tuesday. The club is yet to confirm their fourth foreigner and it is expected that two African footballers will come for trials during the residential camp.
Meanwhile for the fans of their rivals, East Bengal, Chidi Edeh resumed practice on Tuesday after returning late from holiday.
The striker sounded jubilant about partnering with the South Sudanese striker James Moga, who has recently joined the Red and Gold from Pune FC.
"Yes, I know Moga for long. He knows how to score goals. This time we have players like Sueoka and Moga. I think the officials have done a great job. We will try to win the I-League," Chidi stated.
Gurwinder Singh, the dependable central defender of the team suffered a slight knock during the practice. The intensity of his injury is yet to be confirmed though.
