The former Indian national team coach has been appointed chief custodian of the English clubs’ football schools in India...
Bob Houghton’s Indian adventure has just been aggrandized with him been handed the responsibility of ensuring Arsenal FC’s football schools in New Delhi, India, continue to churn with optimum efficiency and unearth gems in this part of the world.
Arsenal had culled their list of suitable candidates based on their track record and it was then Englishman's achievements with the Indian national team, that Houghton was derived as the appropriate man.
“Bob is one of those overseas coaches who knows the Indian condition well, so when the Arsenal decided to spread its root in India, he was the best option available," spilled a source familiar with the matter to The Times of India.
"The main objective is to develop young footballers from the country and give them a proper platform. At the Arsenal Soccer School, our prime target is to ensure that these footballers get international exposure. The presence of Bob will help that in a way," the source poured on, with the revelation that Houghton will look into the technical development of the schools’ undergraduates.
The football school established by Arsenal is still in its incipient stages with the lift-off scheduled at the end of the year. It is impetuous to point out that Arsenal follow the likes of European giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United in establishing these academies to ensure the regions football talent programme gets a make-over.
It is widely expected that Houghton will try his best to ensure a smooth start to his new career having taken his lessons from his tryst with the Indian national team from 2006 to 2011, after which he hasn't entered the coaching arena on a big stage.
