The Real Madrid Foundation opens a social-athletic academy in India

The nine time European champions chose Tiruchirapalli as the venue of their initiative...
The Real Madrid Foundation inaugurated the St Thomas Social-Athletic Academy in the town of Nazareth, Tiruchirapalli, in Tamil Nadu. The centre will benefit 200 students, 126 boys and 74 girls, aged between 10 and 13 who come from families with scarce resources in this impoverished area of the country.

The children will train twice a week and in addition to the sports activities will also receive academic support, English and maths classes and a supplement to their daily diet. Furthermore, there are plans to organise matches between the schools in the area every three or six months.

The Catholic diocesan bishop father Anthony Devotta attended the inauguration along with international volunteers currently working on the City of Hope and Happiness Foundation projects in the city.

The St Thomas Social-Athletic Academy was borne of the cooperation agreement signed by the Real Madrid Foundation and the City of Hope and Happiness Foundation in November 2012. In February 2013 the Real Madrid Foundation coaching team gave a training course for the academy's four coaches as well as 11 others from the Tiruchirapalli area.
