After winning the national finals, SPG FC will be travelling to England to represent India in the global tournament. Goal caught up with the team's captain..
Having been crowned Budweiser India 2013 champions, SPG FC will be rewarded with a trip to London to represent India in the global Budweiser 6v6 Cup finals while also enjoying the comforts of being professional footballers which include first-class hotel accommodations and tickets to the 2013 FA Cup Finals between Manchester City and Wigan Athletic.
SPG FC’s captain Rahul Bhardwaj expressed his delight at winning the national finals, “It felt great! There was a lot of pressure on us. We’ve been playing together for a long time and people in Delhi know us.”
For an amateur footballer, such benefits are the stuff of dreams and Rahul was quick to convey the excitement he and his team-mates share ahead of their trip to England, “We’re all really excited. We’re busy getting our visas and planning our itineraries. The FA Cup finals will be insane because I’ve never watched a live game and it should be an amazing game to watch.”
He was particularly thrilled to visit a country revered for its passionate football following and culture, “To go to England well, it’s every football player’s dream so it feels like a dream come true.”
SPG FC have been regular participants of local five-a-side tournaments in Delhi for a while as Rahul duly pointed out, “Our team has been together for 4 years now. We’ve been playing amateur tournaments which happen a lot in Delhi. We usually practice thrice a week and play matches on the weekend.”
“Most of the players weren’t professionals so these tournaments bring out talent. Although a lot of small tournaments happen, a big tournament like this was great,” Rahul opined when asked for his thoughts on the competition. “Although futsal is introduced in India, this could be a platform for football and futsal,” he concluded.
