Warriors FC coach V Selvaraj rued the inability of his midfielders to press their counterparts quickly enough, as further pressure was heaped on the beleaguered Singaporean following the 3-0 defeat to Churchill Brothers in Pune in a group E AFC Cup tie.
“Yes I am surprised by the result. Credit to Churchill Brothers. They attacked with a lot of pace, especially in midfield. We have to move on though. We will try our best in the rest of the games.”
He pinpointed midfield as the area where they lost the game and opined, “We thought we left a lot of space in midfield, and that really hurt us. We were second to all the loose balls.”
Selvaraj though, refused to give up the ghost, in their quest to qualify from their group for the next round. He stated, “We still have 3 games, including Churchill at home. So we will try to get points and shall take some positives to the next game.”
The coach of the Singapore based side also refused to blame the searing heat for their disjointed performance, while also accepting, that his side failed to deal with striker Sunil Chhetri convincingly.
He mentioned. “We have played in the same heat before. Though it had an effect (on our performance) it should not be an excuse.”
“We underestimated Chhetri a bit. We gave him too much respect and room. They had a lot of pace and we failed to deal with it,” he concluded.
