The East Bengal coach was feeling confident of qualifying but revealed that taking anything away from Tampines would be difficult
At a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon at the Hotel Royal in Singapore, East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan still remember his stint in the S.League and believes his players are ready for their AFC Cup clash against Tampines Rovers.
Singapore football is no stranger to East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan as the 56-year-old used to coach in the S.League with Sengkang Punggol FC (now Hougang United) a decade ago.
“They have always been a good side and we only managed to take a way a point from nine matches against them when I was here,” recollected Morgan.
“But we are quite capable as shown in our own competitions and we are coming on the back of eight games in 24 days in India. So, to come here to Singapore for a few days gets us away from all that is going on in Calcutta and the players are all well rested now and are looking forward to the game.”
The Kolkata side are currently in second spot after two matches and are favourites to advance to the knock-out round and Morgan believes his side is capable of doing just that.
“It is different when we are playing in the AFC Cup, we have got to a good start with four points and it means we are on course to qualify from the group and for us, it would be a wonderful achievement,” he added.
“Maybe 11 points will get us through, we have picked up points away and have three home games which we have won one, so two more home games for us.”
There however would not be much complaint from Morgan on the type of pitch being used at the Jalan Besar stadium as the Indians are accustomed to playing surface.
“We play on artificial surface at home (Salt Lake stadium) in India and we don’t play on much grass these days," Morgan explained.
"We trained at Jalan Besar stadium (on Monday) and it’s a good surface, so there is no problem for us.”
The match between Tampines Rovers and East Bengal will be held at the Jalan Besar stadium on April 3 at 5.15 pm IST.
