In an interview with Goal.com at FICCI Goal 2013 convention 2013, SS Dasgupta, MD, Leisure sports, stressed the importance of having salary caps and player caps for the I-League.
"I think the regional structure in the form of the league (is needed). For example, Goa football League whose roots were formed so many decades back, has the passion, the emotional involvement, the club culture exists in a much greater way as compared to cities like Delhi and Bangalore," S.S Dasgupta, Managing Director, Leisure Sports told Goal.com.
"There are clubs (in Delhi and Bangalore) but these cities lack fan base, proper structure of the bodies functioning there is lacking and needs to be looked after more clinically," he added.
Mr. Dasgupta was an instrumental figure in creating the Nehru Cup way back in 1982 and has also played an important part in promoting other sports in India such as hockey over the years.
When asked if any sort of investment by a big company into such clubs can work, he expressed his doubts. "The sponsoring or investment won't help. The management will make more money, maybe better players can join in, maybe it will be professionally run, but the activities of the city in terms of other football clubs having an emotional fan base is not there. One of the big companies coming in will not help," said the experienced sports marketing professional.
Given the massive losses each I-League club has been making, Dasgupta stressed the importance of concept of Financial Fair Play in the I-League.
"I have talked to Mr. Sunando Dhar (I-League CEO) that there should be a players cap so that it becomes more competitive and a sellable proposition," revealed Dasgupta.
