First professional beach soccer tournament kicks off in Goa

64 teams, including junior sides of I-League clubs Dempo, Sporting Clube de Goa & Churchill 'Red Machines', will participate in the event to be held at Calangute Beach, Goa
Goa will play host to a beach soccer fest which starts from today at Calangute Beach, Goa which will also include delegations from Goan I-League clubs Dempo SC and Sporting Clube de Goa. The event, named Barefoot 2013, is the first professional beach soccer tournament in India played under the rules of Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW), which is the world governing body of beach soccer alongside FIFA.

TransStadia, the organizers of the event alongwith BSWW, have left no stone unturned as the fest will be a blend of sport, music and entertainment. The trophy was unveiled on Monday at Panaji with Managing Director and CEO of TransStadia, Udit Sheth describing the event as a scalable platform to international standard for the up and coming players in the state.

"This is a tremendous launch of beach soccer which will comprise of over 60 teams at the beautiful Calangute beach. I am confident that this platform will give our players an opportunity to compete on a sustainable and scalable platform of competition and improve to international level of our standing," Mr Sheth said.

Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, Goa Football Development Council chairman Rufino Monteiro, Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) Executive Director Elvis Gomes, veteran footballer Bruno Coutinho, Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira were also present for the trophy unveiling ceremony.

Monteiro said this tournament will be a good opportunity to football enthusiasts to participate in this exciting new format.

"The sport is a part of the FIFA family and it is our pleasure to be joining the beach soccer family worldwide," signed off Monteiro.
