Gurjinder Kumar pleased with India call-up

The Red Lizards' left-wing back, Gurjinder Kumar, expressed his feelings on returning to the Indian National Team after a year with
Derrick Pereira had a special word for Gurjinder Kumar after learning about his India call up and said that he has worked hard to get back into the Indian National squad for the international friendly against Palestine on February 6 at Kochi, Kerala.

“It’s a great feeling to be in the radar once again. It’s a friendly match and I am looking forward to playing. I am ready and ready to put out my best,” said an elated Gurjinder to PFC's official website.

The left-back has had an impressive run with Pune FC where just after his first season, he was voted the best U-23 player for the club.

He made his India U-23 debut on 19 June 2011 against Qatar U23 which they went to lose the match 3–1. Less than eight months later, he got his first call up to the Indian national team and was included in the international camp in preparation for the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup which included two friendly matches.

The man from Punjab then made his senior debut for India against Oman on February 23, 2012. He started the match and played the whole of 90 minutes as the left-back. India lost the match 5-1 with the lone Indian goal coming from Dempo striker Joaquim Abranches. This game was a preparation for India ahead of the AFC Challenge Cup 2012, in which Gurjinder was omitted.
Thereafter, Gurjinder was called up for the 2012 Nehru Cup camp in the initial squad but was disappointed as he did not get a chance to play for the Blue Tigers in the tournament. However, he said that coach Derrick Pereira kept his spirits up.

“When I returned from the camp (Nehru Cup) I did feel down, but back in Pune I got support from Coach (Pereira) who told me to work hard. He was motivating and coupled with hard work I aimed at getting back,” he added.

At 22, the young left-back looks really promising and is a great addition to the squad.
