Colin Toal’s side put in a spirited fight on Sunday but came second best in the end…It was Abdiganiyev Ilhomjon’s 80th minute winner which sealed the match for Uzbekistan as they beat India 3-2 in their opening fixture of group D in the AFC U-16 Championship at the Rah Ayan Stadium, Tehran. India did well to come back twice but in the end were undone by Ilhomjon’s strike.
Toal’s side conceded as early as Odilov Mukhiddin gave his side the lead in the 8th minute. Uttam Rai pulled one back two minutes after the break as he headed in from a Lalhimpuia free-kick.
However Uzbekistan managed to take the lead for the second time when Abdullaevr Ibrahim scored from the spot after Myron Mendes brought down Odilov inside the box. Indian captain Lalramzuava suffered a hamstring cramp and had to be replaced around the hour mark.
Uttam Rai once again restored parity in the 71st minute when he headed home from a Raja Rawat cross. Nine minutes later, Uzbekistan went ahead though Ilhomjon who volleyed in a low cross from the right. India Colts next face the Syrians on September 25.
