The Sporting Clube de Goa player admits that he is more comfortable playing as a defender while the Dutch coach was looking for a midfielder...
The 24-year-old feels that there wasn't enough time for him to prove himself while the national camp was shifted from Delhi to Bengaluru which cut short his time on the ground.
"The training was good," he said. "[I] didn't get enough time to prove myself, but I learned a couple of new things. First we traveled to Delhi where we trained for one day, that too on a small ground and then we went to Bengaluru where we practiced for a few days before the big test (selection)."
Observing what the Dutch coach was looking for in his team, he added, "The coach (Koevermans) stresses on keeping the ball on the ground and send a long ball only when you are sure and have a player in sight to receive the ball at the other end."
|I want to be back in India team|
He continued: "Because of a groin injury I was out for one half of a practice game. So now it will depend on my performance in the I-League (to get back into the national team)."
The Goan further admitted that he was a "bit shocked" to be left out of the squad but also revealed that his biggest challenge during the camp was to fit in as a midfielder.
"I was actually played in the midfield, but there are better players than me. So I can proudly say that I'm still young to play in the position in which Mehtab Hussain and Lenny Rodrigues have done a good job for India as they are natural midfielders.
"Anyhow I have to make it back into the [Indian] national team. There will be some international friendly matches coming up, so I will look for my opportunities. Coach Koevermans actually called me personally and spoke to me about his decision," he added.
|My next stop: The Federation Cup|
Sporting Clube de Goa will be participating in the Federation Cup later this month where Adil Khan stressed that his coach Ekendra Singh wants him to play as a defender.
"Sporting coach wants me to play as a defender, so it's up to me to push myself to my best performance wherever the coach wants me. If I continue as a defender, I'm sure to make it back in the India team," he exerted.
"Now as the Federation Cup is coming close, the coach (Koevermans) might come to watch some matches. My main target will be to get back in the [Indian] national team.
"Most of the [Sporting Clube de Goa] squad is almost the same, at least the starting line-up, except that [James] Moga is gone and Bong [Takwi Bertrand] is come in. Now we are shaping up well."
