I can play anywhere Koevermans wants me to - Salgaocar FC's Francis Fernandes
The Goan revealed that he played different roles on either side of the pitch, may it be in attack or defense, before making a name for himself as a winger...
Salgaocar Football Club midfielder Francis Fernandes was ecstatic after being felicitated at his club's function of unveiling its new logo and theme song, on Tuesday.Speaking to Goal.com after being recognised for his contribution to the Indian national team's success at the Nehru Cup, he said, "I'm very happy with the Nehru Cup victory, so now it's time to concentrate on the Federation Cup and the upcoming I-League."
Talking about his attacking role just behind the striker in national coach Wim Koevermans' 4-4-1-1 system, Fernandes savoured the experience of playing with Sunil Chhetri.
He remarked that, "Sunil Chhetri is a very good striker so playing with him was a good experience for me and the coach (Wim Koevermans) also guided me how to fit into the team."
The 26-year-old also revealed that he didn't always feature in the attacking third during his stint with Salgaocar FC from 2006, before which he started his professional playing career with Vasco Sports Club in 2002.
"It's just now that I'm playing for Salgaocar first team that everyone recognises me as a right wing player," he said. "This is where I usually play for my club now, but I am very flexible with the role that I'm given. I can play anywhere the coach wants me to."
"I played for Salgaocar in different positions and I have been used to it for quite some time. I played for Salgaocar on the left half and on the right, right back and left back also. So it's where the team requires me and I'll give the best when I'm on the field," he concluded.
