India’s top performance in the Nehru Cup final on Sunday against Cameroon where they won 7-6 (5-4 on pen) drew praise from several quarters such as the former legends, media and fans alike.
Shrinivas Dempo, the chairman of Dempo SC, congratulated Team India and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for winning a hat-trick of Nehru Cup titles in the past five years.
“India proved supreme in the finals. My sincere congratulations to the Indian football team, the AIFF for their moment of success,” Dempo told The Navhind Times.
With IMG-Reliance, the commercial and marketing partners of the AIFF, presenting their ‘Vision 2026’ where they envision India to qualify for the World Cup in 2026 and Rob Baan, the technical director, dreaming of the same in 2022, Dempo believes that the day is not far when the 168th ranked nation makes the cut into the best 32 nations at the World Cup.
“The achievement highlights the triumph of Indian football over a very higher ranked team like Cameroon and I am sure that as a country we will climb up the FIFA rankings sooner rather than later and make our way into the World Cup one day,” he added.
