Wellington Phoenix ask for their game to be shifted from Guwahati to Imphal
The A-League side’s opening game against United Sikkim FC has been shifted following the volatile situation in the state of Assam…
New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix, an A-League side on tour to India, expressed their concerns of having to play the opening match of the North East Lajong Super Series on August 24 given the growing tense situation in Assam’s capital.
Following their request, the match has been moved to Imphal and will be played on the same date. Earlier the I-League clubs too had raised their concerns of the Federation Cup being hosted at Guwahati following the All India Football Federation (AIFF) had to reportedly drop it as a venue.
Lajong FC owner Larsing Ming said that Wellington Phoenix have expressed reservation in playing in Guwahati due to recent violence in parts of Assam and the match will be held in Imphal on the same date.
"Wellington Phoenix have some reservations in playing in Assam because of the tense situation in the state. So the match has been shifted to Imphal which will be played on the same date of August 24," Larsing Ming, the owner of Shillong Lajong, told PTI.
Imphal, the capital of Manipur, shall host the second match on August 26 while the final game will be played at Shillong on September 1.
