Salgaocar SC sign Australia’s Sean Rooney to complete their roster for the 2012-13 season
The former I-League champions have roped in former Newcastle Jets striker after having endured a disappointing season in the I-League where they failed to score enough goals...
Salgaocar SC have completed their foreigners roster for the 2012-13 season as they confirmed the signing of Sean Rooney from Indonesia’s Deltras FC. They had earlier signed HAL's Jagaba Hamza, United Sikkim's Quinton Jacobs and retained the services of their captain Luciano Sobrosa.
The Goan giants failed to find their rhythm in front of goal as their strikers and attacking midfielders continued to miss several goal scoring opportunities which saw them score a paltry 30 goals in the I-League, which was the least number of goals scored for a team in the top eight.
This was the primary reason why Salgaocar failed to defend their I-League title in 2011-12 season as they had notched up 58 goals in the previous I-League campaign.

Bencherifa looks up to Rooney
“Sean has been training with us for about a week; he has also played three friendly matches in which he scored in every match.
"He managed to impress me with his skills, technique and a deft scoring touch. I believe he is going to be a good prospect for us with his scoring ability upfront, something which we want to improve compared to our last season," coach Karim Bencherifa was quoted saying.
Apart from Deltras FC, Rooney has previously also plied his trade for A-League’s Newcastle Jets for three seasons where he failed to make a mark before agreeing to play in New South Wales League for Blacktown City FC.
"We had shortlisted some Asian players for the trials and we have signed Sean Rooney who fits into our system. We hope that he will deliver his best performance with us,” Salgaocar general secretary RAJ Gomes told The Navhind Times.
